Don’t let the fear of “I don’t speak the language” stop you from seeing the world. 90% of communication is non-verbal.
I traveled through rural China without speaking a word of Mandarin. It was fine. Here is How to Overcome Language Barriers While Traveling.
1. Learn the “Magic Three” Words
In every country, learn these three words immediately:
- Hello (Opens the door)
- Thank You (Shows respect)
- Delicious (Makes you friends instantly)
If you tell a grandmother in Italy that her pasta is “Delizioso,” she will adopt you.
2. Use Visual Aids (Google Images)
Can’t explain you are allergic to shrimp? Show a picture of a shrimp with a big red “X” over it. Need a toilet? Show a picture of a toilet. It sounds silly, but it works 100% of the time.
3. The Google Translate “Conversation Mode”
This feature is like Star Trek. You speak English, the phone speaks Japanese. They speak Japanese, the phone speaks English. I have had full conversations with taxi drivers using this.
4. Smile and Mime
If you smile, point, and make hand gestures, people will help you. We are all humans. We all understand “thirsty,” “hungry,” and “lost.”
Kiran’s Take: Don’t Be Loud
Speaking English LOUDER does not make it understandable. It just makes you look aggressive.
Speak slowly. Use simple words (“Food” instead of “Cuisine”). And always smile. A smile is the universal translator.
Conclusion
Language barriers are part of the adventure. They force you to connect with people on a human level. Don’t be afraid to look silly. It’s how you learn.
