Budgeting sounds boring. It feels restrictive. That is why most people fail at it.
But the 50/30/20 Rule is different. It is not about tracking every single penny you spend on gum. It is about broad percentages. It gives you permission to spend money, as long as you hit your ratios.
Here is How to Budget Your Salary Using the 50/30/20 Rule.
The Basics
Take your after-tax income (what actually hits your bank account). Divide it into three buckets:
1. 50% Needs (Survival)
These are bills you must pay to live. If you lost your job tomorrow, these bills would still be there.
- Rent / Mortgage
- Groceries (Not restaurants)
- Utilities (Electricity, Water, Internet)
- Minimum Debt Payments
- Insurance (Health, Car)
The Trap: If your rent is 60% of your income, you are “house poor.” You need to move or get a roommate. The math doesn’t work otherwise.
2. 30% Wants (Fun)
This is the best part. 30% of your money is YOURS to waste. Yes, waste.
- Netflix / Spotify
- Dining Out / Uber Eats
- New Clothes
- Concert Tickets
- Travel
Why this works: Most budgets fail because they ban fun. This budget mandates fun. As long as you stay within 30%, you can buy that $7 latte without guilt.
3. 20% Savings (Freedom)
This is money for “Future You.” It buys your freedom.
- Emergency Fund
- Retirement (401k / Roth IRA)
- Debt Repayment (anything above the minimum)
- Down Payment for a House
Automation is Key: Set up an automatic transfer on payday. Move this 20% to a separate High-Yield Savings Account immediately. If you don’t see it, you won’t spend it.
Kiran’s Take: The “Reverse Budget”
I hate spreadsheets. So I do this backwards.
On payday, I immediately send 20% to savings. I pay my rent/bills (50%). Whatever is left in the checking account is “Guilt-Free Spending Money.”
I watch that number go down to $0 by the end of the month. I don’t track categories. If the money is there, I spend it. If it’s not, I stay home. Simple.
Conclusion
You don’t need a math degree to get rich. You just need discipline and simple ratios. Master the 50/30/20 rule, and you will build wealth on autopilot.
